Math Update: Geometry: Symmetrie - your child probably showed you the animals they drew on grid paper. They are part of a geometry lesson on symmetrie. The next grid paper animals will be "translation", "Verschiebung". Even though it is theoretically easier than reflection, it seems to be a more difficult concept for young students.
Money: I introduced money, i.e. euros up to 20. We have coins /Münzen (1,2) and bills / Scheine (5,10,20). Students have to count the money in a purse and understand that more pieces do not automatically mean more money (or a higher value). They also have to try and find the fewest amount of coins and bills possible to make a certain sum. So if the sum is 8 Euro, they should be able to show various ways to "make 8", and then also find the way that uses the smallest amount of pieces, which is a five euro bill, a two euro coin and a one euro coin.
Strategy doubles plus one: Students practiced the doubles up to 10 (so 20). They learned to use doubles as a strategy for adding two numbers that are only one number apart. For this they have to find the number that is actually a double in the equation. If they take the higher number, they would have to subtract one from the sum, which proved complicated to some students. We certainly focus on using the smaller number for a doubles plus one strategy. 3+4 ... the hidden double is 3+3. 3+3=6. 3+4=7 (or 4+4=8, so 4+3=7, but this is complicated for most first graders). So if you want to practice, please always use the smaller number!
Subtraction: Just starting. Find examples in the environment, come up with stories, draw pictures. A common mistake is this. Draw a subtraction picture. Child wants to draw 4-2. Draws 4 birds, draws 2 more birds that fly away. Unfortunately, some teaching videos actually do that nonsense too. However, this is not showing 4-2. The highest amount on the picture is 4 (birds, hearts, circles....). Then 2 of those are x-ed out or marked somehow. 2 of the original 4 are left. 4-2=2. (Otherwise 4-2=4+2, and 2 are taken away, so 4-2=4 oops.)
The next set of workpages that come home for homework are the doubles plus one papers that your child has been working on. These sheets still need to be finished. After that, we need to catch up in the book.
Time / Clock: We have talked about time, about a.m. and p.m. , and already learned the full hour, which actually comes much later in the book, but is always fun, so I like to do it early in the year. Also it shows a simple number line (clock) and is a great way to show number lines (or circles...) in actual use.
